R32 Eco-Friendly Refrigerant Chillers for Europe: Trends, Technology, and Export Practice

Oct.15.2026

As the EU F-Gas regulation continues to tighten, R410A has been phased out of the European market due to its high GWP of 2088. R32 eco-friendly refrigerant is becoming the mainstream choice for industrial chillers shipped to Europe. With a GWP of 675, R32 reduces GWP by about 68% compared with R410A. It is classified as an ASHRAE A2L mildly flammable refrigerant, offering strong environmental and energy-efficiency performance, but it is flammable and explosive, so compressors must be ATEX explosion-proof certified.

Driven by EU Regulations

Under the F-Gas regulation, from 2027, independent chiller units with a cooling capacity ≤12 kW must use refrigerants with GWP below 150; from 2029, products >50 kW will also be restricted. Although R32 does not reach below 150, it is widely used as a transitional solution. The European R32 market is expected to grow at a CAGR of about 5.6%.

Technical Challenges and Higher Costs

R32 systems operate at 50%–70% higher pressure than R410A. Copper tube wall thickness must be increased, and compressors must use A2L-specific models with leak detection systems. Electrical panels and wiring also need to meet the ATEX explosion-proof directive, increasing overall cost by about 14% compared with R410A units. In addition, R32 global quotas tightened in 2026, with Chinese industrial chiller manufacturers’ annual R32 quotas falling 12.5% year on year, which may further push up refrigerant purchase prices.

Export and Transport Practice

Because R32 is a Class 2.1 flammable gas, transport restrictions are strict. During export, the refrigerant is usually removed from the system, leaving only a slight holding pressure to prevent air and moisture from entering the pipes. The customer evacuates and recharges on site. Transport requires an MSDS and dangerous goods declaration. Air freight generally requires no refrigerant, while sea freight can be delivered with refrigerant after compliant declaration.

Conclusion

Although R32 brings higher costs through thicker pipe walls, upgraded compressors, and explosion-proof electrical systems, its combined advantages in GWP, energy efficiency, and regulatory compliance make it the clear trend for the European chiller market. Completing technical validation and ATEX certification for R32 product lines in advance is key for exporters to remain competitive.
